Department “Nature” The exposition of the “Nature” department was opened in 1975 and is housed in a neat building located in the park area of Belogradchik. The museum is a permanent object of interest and attention, both by tourists visiting the city of Belogradchik and by students in the region. Frequent visitors are students, graduates and research workers, who find here photo documents, summarized data from field studies, as well as rich specialized literature. The exposition of the museum is the only one of its kind in Northwestern Bulgaria. The idea since its creation was to emphasize the ecological aspects of nature in addition to the direct acquaintance with the representatives of the flora and fauna of the area. At the moment, the exposition contains 520 exhibits, and the fund has about 2,500 more (about 3,000 in total). Of these, 39 are preparations of European and globally protected species of animals included in the Bern Convention, and 128 of the exhibits (representatives of fauna and flora) have the status of endangered according to the Biodiversity Act. All this makes the collection extremely valuable. In the department of a small area, one can see some of the most attractive representatives of living and non-living nature, characteristic of the territory of North-West Bulgaria from past geological times to the present day. Among them are rock specimens, preserved species of animals (insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals), bird eggs, herbarium specimens of plants. In the exhibition halls, the exhibits are arranged according to the ecological principle (according to the biotope they inhabit), which allows to get a clearer idea of the relationships in nature. Specialists from the department have developed fascinating talks, tailored to the age and interests of visitors and presenting entertaining and curious aspects of the existence of the living world. There are also photo boards in the exposition, which exhibit wonderful views from the unique natural landmark “Belogradchiski skali”. The museum stores in its main and scientific auxiliary fund over 3000 natural specimens and other materials, including: minerals, rocks and minerals; paleontological materials (bones of prehistoric animals such as cave bear and cave hyena); zoological materials (stuffed animals, skins, skulls); herbalized plant species; original photographic materials and photographs created by the museum’s curators. Over the years, a rich library containing popular science and specialized literature with over 600 titles has been collected. The scientific research activity of the “Nature” department focuses on rare and endangered species of the flora and fauna of Northwestern Bulgaria, as well as on unique local endemic species.
